The Project

The new Unibail-Rodamco Leisure and Business Centre in Lyon’s new Confluence district was inaugurated in March 2012.

Lyon, epicentre of the lighting industry and organiser of the famous festival of light, wanted to illuminate the roof of the centre with a total area of 24,000 m². 

Thanks to the Philips Color Kinetics innovative lighting solution, the scenography envisaged by lighting designers Alexis Coussement (ACL) and Charles Vicarini embellishes the city with LED lighting.

The Leisure and Business Centre, which includes a business centre, hotel and a multiplex cinema, has a roof made of an inflatable material – ETFE – created by the architect Jean-Paul Viguier for Unibail-Rodamco, one of the major commercial property groups.

The Centre’s roof provides an entertaining urban reference point, creating a vibrant effect of natural lighting by day and dynamic LED lighting at night.

The challenge for the lighting designers was to create a lighting system to illuminate a roof made up of a series of translucent inflated cushions. The cushions – in a combination of triangle and diamond shapes – combine to form seven curved areas equivalent to three and a half football pitches!

The lighting designers chose Philips for the project. “The technology is based on Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting, which has been chosen for the quality of its control system,” says Alexis Coussement, ”It is important for an installation of this size that all the lights respond at the same time and that there is no problem with synchronisation or signal loss.”

In addition to the dynamic lighting system for this exceptional roof, Philips also installed static lighting over the entire façade of the building using LEDline.
