Singapore

"Philips was very committed to helping us pursue our sustainability aspirations." - Matthew Clubston, Manager (Facilities), BHP Billiton, Singapore.

The Project

BHP and Billiton, two mining companies founded in the mid-1800s, merged in June 2001 becoming one of the world’s largest diversified resources companies. In June 2011, BHP Billiton relocated their Singapore offices to a new premise in the prime Marina Bay financial district. Their new office needed to reflect the core ideals of sustainable and eco-friendly development, across all 10 floors at MBFC Tower 2.

BHP Billiton needed a sustainable lighting solution that was technologically advanced, green and sustainable. Apart from this corporate commitment, they needed a solution that couldimprove the work environment, employees’ wellbeing and efficiency

The Solution

BHP Billiton accepted Philips’ proposal to use LEDs, beginning with the trading floor. LEDs enable for huge savings in electricity consumption and operate at considerably lower temperatures- as LEDs emit less heat, the overall temperature of the office space was lower, thus lowering the power consumption of the air-conditioning.

With over 400 new luminaries installed, Philips lighting made it possible to achieve extremely low power consumption without sacrificing light quality as compared to the original systems. The use of LEDs demonstrates BHP Billiton’s commitment to going green and further reinforces their sustainability position in the market.
